Background: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has over thousands-of-years history of use. Chaihu-Shugan-San (CSS), and Shen-ling-bai-zhu-San (SLBZS), are famous traditional Chinese herbal medicine formulas, which have been used in China, for the treatment of many chronic diseases.Materials and Methods:This study investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of CSS and SLBZS on signaling molecules involved in p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK), pathway on hepatocytes of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), rats induced by high fat diet. SD male rats were randomly divided into 8 groups: negative control group, model control group, high (9.6g/kg/day)/low (3.2g/kg/day)-dose CSS group, high (30g/kg/day)/low (10g/kg/day)-dose SLBZS group, high (39.6g/kg/day)/low (13.2g/kg/day)-dose integrated group. The rats of NASH model were induced by feeding a high-fat diet. After 16, wks, Hepatocytes were isolated from 6, rats in each group by collagenase perfusion. The liver histopathological changes and serum inflammatory cytokines TNF-Ī±, IL-6 were determined. The proteins of TLR4,Ā  phosphor-p38 MAPK and p38 MAPK involved in p38 MAPK signal pathway were assayed. Results: The statistical data indicated the NASH model rats reproduced typical histopathological features of NASH in human. CSS and SLBZS ameliorated lipid metabolic disturbance, attenuated NASH progression, decreased the levels of TNF-Ī± and IL-6 in serum, as well as inhibited TLR4 protein expression, p38 MAPK phosphorylation, and activation of p38 MAPK. In conclusion, CSS and SLBZS might work as a significant anti-inflammatory effect on hepatocyte of NASH by inhibiting the activation of TLR4, p-p38 MAPK and p38 MAPK involved in p38 MAPK signal pathway. Conclusion: To some extent, CSS and SLBZS may be a potential alternative and complementary medicine to protect against liver injury, alleviate the inflammation reaction, moderate NASH progression.Key words: p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase; Toll like receptor 4; Hepatocytes; Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis; Traditional Chinese medicine

Cyclic thermomechanical testing of 316 stainless steel

    Get PDF
Materials used for components such as power plant steam pipes, gas turbines discs and die forming machinery can be subject to combinations of extreme loading and temperature conditions. In addition, the materials can contain or develop cracks. Once a crack has initiated, the conditions under which the components operate can cause these cracks to propagate. This paper is concerned with the experimental testing of 316 stainless steel, corner cracked samples under thermomechanical fatigue conditions, and the measurement of the crack propagation during testing using alternating current potential difference readings. Fracture mechanics (Paris Law) methods have been used in the processing of the experimental data

Effect of soil-pile-structure interaction on seismic behaviour of nuclear power station via shaking table tests

    Get PDF
To better understand the characteristics of the seismic response of nuclear power stations with fixed-base and pile-raft foundations, a series of shaking table tests were performed. The shaking table tests included three cases: free-field soil, fixed-base structure without soil, and superstructure with a pile-raft foundation embedded in the soil. One white noise excitation and three earthquake motions with different earthquake intensity were selected as the ground motion to identify the seismic response of the structure, raft, piles, and soils. The effects of earthquake intensity, earthquake frequency, soil-pile-structure interaction, and soil nonlinearity on the system dynamic responses were analysed. The test results show that the natural frequency and the damping ratio of the superstructure for the pile-raft foundation and the fixed-base structure are different, owing to the soil-pile-structure interaction effect. The acceleration amplification ratio of the fixed-base superstructure shows a significantly higher value than that of the superstructure with a pile-raft foundation. The average peak acceleration ratio of the raft for the pile-raft foundation (raft/soil surface) is 1.2. Under the long period wave excitations, the bending moment of the pile is greater than that of short-period wave excitations, and the peak bending moment occurs at the pile head. The vertical and horizontal displacement and residual displacement increases with the earthquake intensity. These observations suggested that the design of nuclear power station with a pile-raft foundation embedded in clay cannot be simplified as a fixed-base structure. Moreover, adopting pile-raft foundation for nuclear power station will extend the choice of finding suitable construction sites for the nuclear power stations, and the test results could provide references for engineers

LHCD and ICRF heating experiments in H-mode plasmas on EAST

    Get PDF
An ICRF system with power up to 6.0 MW and a LHCD system up to 4MW have been applied for heating and current drive experiments on EAST. Intensive lithium wall coating was intensively used to reduce particle recycling and Hydrogen concentration in Deuterium plasma, which is needed for effective ICRF and LHCD power absorption in high density plasmas. Significant progress has been made with ICRF heating and LHW current drive for realizing the H-mode plasma operation in EAST. In 2010, H-mode was generated and sustained by LHCD alone, where lithium coating and gas puffing launcher mouth were applied to improve the LHCD power coupling and penetration into the core plasmas at high density of H-modes. During the last two experimental campaigns, ICRF Heating experiments were carried out at the fixed frequency of 27MHz, achieving effective ions and electrons heating with the H Minority Heating (H-MH) mode, where electrons are predominantly heated by collisions with high energy minority ions. The H-MH mode gave the best plasma performance, and realized H-mode alone in 2012. Combination of ICRF and LHW power injection generated the H-mode plasmas with various ELMy characteristics. The first successful application of the ICRF Heating in the D (He3) plasma was also achieved. The progress on ICRF heating, LHCD experiments and their application in achieving H-mode operation from last two years will be discussed in this report

Optical absorption into 6Ā mm thick solā€“gel derived films, annealed at 1300Ā Ā°C of 12CaOĀ·7Al2O3 calcium aluminate binary compound on MgO怈100怉 single crystal substrates was studied at temperatures ranging from room temperature to 300Ā Ā°C. Experimental data were analysed in both Tauc and Urbach regions. The optical band gap decreased from 4.088Ā eV at 25Ā Ā°C to 4.051Ā eV at 300Ā Ā°C, while Urbach energy increased from 0.191Ā eV at 25Ā Ā°C to 0.257Ā eV at 300Ā Ā°C. The relationship between the optical band gap and the Urbach energy at different temperatures showed an almost linear relationship from which the theoretical values of 4.156 and 0.065Ā eV were evaluated for the band gap energy and Urbach energy of a 12CaOĀ·7Al2O3 crystal with zero structural disorder at 0Ā K

    Resonances in J/Ļˆā†’Ļ•Ļ€+Ļ€āˆ’J/\psi \to \phi \pi ^+\pi ^- and Ļ•K+Kāˆ’\phi K^+K^-

    A partial wave analysis is presented of J/Ļˆā†’Ļ•Ļ€+Ļ€āˆ’J/\psi \to \phi \pi ^+\pi ^- and Ļ•K+Kāˆ’\phi K^+K^- from a sample of 58M J/ĻˆJ/\psi events in the BES II detector. The f0(980)f_0(980) is observed clearly in both sets of data, and parameters of the Flatt\' e formula are determined accurately: M=965Ā±8M = 965 \pm 8 (stat) Ā±6\pm 6 (syst) MeV/c2^2, g1=165Ā±10Ā±15g_1 = 165 \pm 10 \pm 15 MeV/c2^2, g2/g1=4.21Ā±0.25Ā±0.21g_2/g_1 = 4.21 \pm 0.25 \pm 0.21. The Ļ•Ļ€Ļ€\phi \pi \pi data also exhibit a strong Ļ€Ļ€\pi \pi peak centred at M=1335M = 1335 MeV/c2^2. It may be fitted with f2(1270)f_2(1270) and a dominant 0+0^+ signal made from f0(1370)f_0(1370) interfering with a smaller f0(1500)f_0(1500) component. There is evidence that the f0(1370)f_0(1370) signal is resonant, from interference with f2(1270)f_2(1270). There is also a state in Ļ€Ļ€\pi \pi with M=1790āˆ’30+40M = 1790 ^{+40}_{-30} MeV/c2^2 and Ī“=270āˆ’30+60\Gamma = 270 ^{+60}_{-30} MeV/c2^2; spin 0 is preferred over spin 2. This state, f0(1790)f_0(1790), is distinct from f0(1710)f_0(1710). The Ļ•KKĖ‰\phi K\bar K data contain a strong peak due to f2ā€²(1525)f_2'(1525). A shoulder on its upper side may be fitted by interference between f0(1500)f_0(1500) and f0(1710)f_0(1710).Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. Submitted to Phys. Lett.

First Measurements of eta_c Decaying into K^+K^-2(pi^+pi^-) and 3(pi^+pi^-)

The decays of eta_c to K^+K^-2(pi^+pi^-) and 3(pi^+pi^-) are observed for the first time using a sample of 5.8X10^7 J/\psi events collected by the BESII detector. The product branching fractions are determined to be B(J/\psi-->gamma eta_c)*B(eta_c-->K^+K^-pi^+pi^-pi^+pi^-)=(1.21+-0.32+- 0.23)X10^{-4},B(J/Ļˆāˆ’āˆ’>gammaetac)āˆ—B(etacāˆ’āˆ’>Kāˆ—0KĖ‰āˆ—0pi+piāˆ’)=(1.29+āˆ’0.43+āˆ’0.32)X10āˆ’4,B(J/\psi-->gamma eta_c)*B(eta_c-->K^{*0}\bar{K}^{*0}pi^+pi^-)= (1.29+-0.43+-0.32)X10^{-4}, and (J/\psi-->gamma eta_c)* B(eta_c-->pi^+pi^-pi^+pi^-pi^+pi^-)= (2.59+-0.32+-0.48)X10^{-4}. The upper limit for eta_c-->phi pi^+pi^-pi^+pi^- is also obtained as B(J/\psi-->gamma eta_c)*B(eta_c--> phi pi^+pi^-pi^+pi^-)< 6.03 X10^{-5} at the 90% confidence level.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
